Staying Active During Summer Heat: Tips for Safe and Healthy Movement

img-hero-slide-2

When summer arrives, warm weather and longer days make it tempting to get outside and move. But exercising in hot, humid conditions can put extra strain on your body — and without the right precautions, it can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses.

At Laurelwood Chiropractic Wellness Centre, we believe staying active is essential for your overall health, but safety should always come first. Here’s how you can keep moving all summer long without overheating.

1. Choose the Right Time of Day

Plan workouts for early mornings or evenings when the sun is lower, temperatures are cooler, and UV exposure is reduced. Avoid strenuous activity between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., when heat and humidity peak.

2. Hydrate Before, During, and After Exercise

Dehydration can creep up quickly in the heat. Drink water regularly — not just when you’re thirsty. If you’re exercising for over an hour, consider a drink with electrolytes to replenish sodium and potassium lost through sweat.

💡 Tip: Keep a reusable water bottle with you to encourage consistent sipping throughout the day.

3. Wear Breathable, Light-Colored Clothing

Moisture-wicking fabrics allow sweat to evaporate, helping you stay cool. Light colors reflect sunlight, while darker clothing absorbs heat.

4. Listen to Your Body

Feeling dizzy, nauseous, or overly fatigued? These may be early signs of heat exhaustion. Slow down, find shade, and rehydrate immediately. Don’t push through discomfort — it’s not worth the risk.

5. Adapt Your Activities

On particularly hot days, swap intense workouts for lower-impact options like walking, yoga, or swimming. Indoor activities, such as strength training or stretching, can keep you active without exposing you to extreme heat.

Why Summer Activity Matters

Regular movement supports joint mobility, boosts mood, and helps maintain energy levels. Staying active during the summer can also help offset the sluggishness that sometimes comes with higher temperatures — as long as you do it safely.

Summer is a wonderful time to embrace the outdoors, but heat safety is key to keeping your wellness goals on track. By planning ahead, staying hydrated, and adjusting your activity level, you can enjoy a healthy, active season. Contact Laurelwood Chiropractic Wellness Centre | (519) 883-4188
